Theca with first class relics of two founders of the Discalced Carmelites: Saint John of the Cross and Saint Teresa of Avila

Oval glass-fronted silver reliquary theca inside of a lavishly decorated containter frame housing ex ossibus relics of Saint John of the Cross and Saint Teresa of Ávila, founders of the Discalced Carmelites. The relics are surrounded by twisted wire oranmentation and identified on a paper cedulae as S. Joan. a. Cr / S. Theres V. The theca is secured on the back with a seal of red Spanish wax with inprint of a coat of arms of a Pope Pius VI (p. 1775-1799).

Saint John of the Cross, O.C.D. (†1591), was a major figure of the Counter-Reformation, a Spanish mystic, a Roman Catholic saint, a Carmelite friar and a priest. Patron of Contemplative life; contemplatives; mystical theology; mystics; and Spanish poets.

Saint Teresa of Ávila, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus († 1582), was a prominent Spanish mystic, Carmelite nun, author during the Counter Reformation, and theologian of contemplative life through mental prayer. She was a reformer of the Carmelite Order and is considered to be, along with John of the Cross, a founder of the Discalced Carmelites. She was canonized in 1622 by Pope Gregory XV, and in 1970 was named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI. She is a Holy Patron of bodily ills; headaches; chess; loss of parents; people in need of grace; people in religious orders; people ridiculed for their piety; sick people; and sickness.
