Saint Nicholas of Myra (Greek: Άγιος Νικόλαος, Николай Чудотворец) (270 - 343), was a historic 4th-century Saint and Greek Bishop of Myra. Because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession, he is also known as Nikolas the Wonderworker ( Νικόλαος ο Θαυματουργός, Николай Чудотворец). He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, and thus became the model for Santa Claus. His reputation evolved among the faithful, as was common for early Christian saints. Saint Nicholas is the patron Saint of sailors, merchants, archers, thieves, children, and students in Greece, Belgium, France, Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia, Albania, Russia, the Republic of Macedonia, Slovakia, Serbia, and Montenegro. He is also the patron saint of Aberdeen, Amsterdam, Barranquilla, Bari, Beit Jala, Fribourg, Huguenots, Kozani, Liverpool, Paternopoli, Sassari, Siggiewi, and Lorraine. His feastday is 6 December.

The Royal Doors are the central doors of the Iconostasis in an Eastern Orthodox or Greek-Catholic Church where the sanctuary (which is referred to as the "altar" among Eastern Christians) is separated from the nave by a wooden screen called the Iconostasis. The Iconostasis represents Christian continuity from the veil of the Temple in Jerusalem which separated the people from the Holy of Holies that housed the Ark of the Covenant. The central double doors of the Iconostasis are the "Holy Doors" (Святые Врата), which are considered to be most sacred, and may only be entered at certain sacred moments during the services, and only by ordained clergy. A typical gate consists of two hinged doors made of wood that have painted on them an icon of the Annunciation in the form of a diptych with the four Evangelists painted underneath. The doors may be intricately carved and gilded, and are almost always topped by a cross. Theologically the Holy Doors represent the gates of Jerusalem, through which Christ entered on Palm Sunday and the entrance to the Heavenly Jerusalem. In the Orthodox practice, there are detailed rules as to when the doors are to be opened during Vespers, Matins and the Divine Liturgy representing moments when God is especially present to his people, such as during the reading of the Gospel, or when the faithful are receiving Holy Communion.

Икона - Покров Пресвятой Богородицы, Палех

Palekh school, 19th century

10 in x 12 1/2 in (25.5 cm x 31.5 cm)

The Protection (Pokrov) of the Mother of God is one of the most beloved Feast days on the Orthodox calendar commemorated on October 1. The feast day celebrates the appearance of the Mother of God at Constantinople in the X century at the time when the people in the city were threatened by a barbarian invasion. St. Andrew, the Holy Fool with his disciple St. Epiphanius, and a group of people, saw the Mother of God, St. John the Baptist, and several other Saints and Angels during a vigil in the Church of Blachernae, nearby the city gates. The Mother of God approached the center of the church, knelt down and remained in prayer for a long time with her face drowned in tears. Then she took her veil off and spread it over the people as a sign of protection. After the appearance of the Mother of God, the danger was averted and the city was spared from bloodshed and suffering.
