1853 Documented reliquary theca with rare relics of the Pillar of St. Paul the Apostle

Oval brass glass-fronted reliquary housing ex columna duollotionis (of the double-pillar) pebble relics of Saint Paul, the Apostle. The relic is affixed to the background of red silk ground surrounded by silver wire ornamentation and identified in Latin on a typeset cedula label as S. Pauli Apos. (St. Paul, the Apostle ). On the back, under a protective cap, the theca is secured with a perfectly preserved seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint with a coat of arms of Giuseppe Maria Pietro Raffaele Castellani O.E.S.A. (†1854), Titular Bishop of Porphyreon (1839-1854), Papal Sacristan and Assistant to the Pontifical Throne of Pope Gregory XVI. The relic is accompanied by the original matching authentics document issued by Fr. Castellani in 1853.

Saint Paul’s Column is the ancient pillar in the Cypriot city of Paphos where Paul the Apostle was scourged with lashes and martyred. According to tradition, when Saint Paul visited Paphos to teach Christianity to the locals, the Roman lord of Paphos punished him to a lashing for his teaching. He was knotted on the pillar and after the third lash, he kneed down. The lash was of a special type, with 13 lashes coming from the main lash. So, the three lashes were actually 39, as with each one, 13 lashes hit him on his back. There is still a local say that Saint Paul received saranta para mia, i.e. forty but one, so 39 hits.
