Theca with first class relic of Saint Jude (Judas Thaddeus), Apostle

Oval glass-fronted reliquary theca housing relics of Saint Jude (Judas Thaddeus), Apostle. The relics are affixed to a golden silk background, surrounded by paperole and twisted silver wire ornamentation and identified on a paper cedula label as S. Thaddei Ap. (Saint Thaddeus, Apostle). On the back, under a protective cap, the theca is protected by a seal of red wax with a perfectly preserved imprint of Monsignor Nicolo Clarelli Parracciani (†1872), Bishop of Montefiascone & Corneto Rieti in Italy.

Saint Jude, also known as Judas Thaddeus, was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. He is sometimes identified with Jude, the brother of Jesus, but is clearly distinguished from Judas Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Jesus prior to his crucifixion. Judas Thaddaeus became known as Jude after early translators of the New Testament from Greek into English sought to distinguish him from Judas Iscariot and subsequently abbreviated his forename. Most versions of the New Testament in languages other than English and French refer to Judas and Jude by the same name. The Armenian Apostolic Church honors Thaddeus along with Saint Bartholomew as its patron saints. In the Roman Catholic Church, he is the patron saint of desperate cases and lost causes.
