Silver theca with the first-class relic of Apostle Saint James the Less

Late 19th-century silver oval theca housing on the background of red silk the first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relic of Apostle Saint James the Less. The relic is titled on ornate paper cedula as Ex Oss. S. Jacobi Min. Ap. The back of the theca is secured by a seal of red Spanish wax with a coat of arms of Guglielmo Pifferi (+1910) O.S.A., titular Bishop of Porphyreon and papal sacristan in charge of the care of the sacred items - items that belong to the Holy Father and the papal chapels in the Vatican.

James, son of Alphaeus was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus, appearing under this name in all three of the Synoptic Gospels' lists of the apostles. He is often identified with James the Less and is commonly known by that name in church tradition. He is also labeled "the minor", "the little", "the lesser", or "the younger", according to translation. He appears only four times in the New Testament, each time in a list of the twelve apostles. His feast day is celebrated on May 3 (Roman Catholic Church) and 9 October (Eastern Orthodox Church). He is a Holy Patron of apothecaries; druggists; dying people; Frascati, Italy; fullers; milliners; Monterotondo, Italy; pharmacists; and Uruguay.
