Russian icon - The Virgin of the Annunciation

The Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary is the Christian celebration of the announcement by the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and become the mother of Jesus, the Son of God, marking his Incarnation. Gabriel is shown blessing with one hand and holding a stem of lilies in the other, while the Virgin Mary is depicted turned towards the Angel holding the book of Gospels opened on Luke (1:29) "You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus."
