Реликварий с Реликвией от Покрова Пресвятой Богородицы смоченной Святой Кровью Иисуса

Fancy Rocaille glass-fronted reliquary theca of gilt bronze housing substantial and extremely rare relic from the Veil of the Virgin Mary soaked in Blood of Jesus. The relic is centered on a gilt paper burst on a red silk background and identified on a hand-written paper cedula label as DE VELO BMV IMBVTO SANGUINE D.N.J.C. (of the Veil of the Blessed Virgin Mary Soaked in Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ). On the back, the theca is protected by a perfectly preserved seal of red Spanish wax with a clear imprint of a coat of arms of Fr. Giuseppe-Francisco Caffarena, the Vicar General to Gianni Lercari (†1802), the Archbishop of Genoa (1767-1802). The reliquary comes in original silk lined case of tooled leather.

According to tradition, the Veil of the Blessed Virgin Mary was worn by the Virgin as she stood at the foot of the Cross. It had been transferred in the early years of the Christianity from Jerusalem to Constantinople when it was presented by the Byzantine Empress Irene to the Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne. In 876 his descendant Charles the Bald gave the relic to the cathedral at Chartres. The Veil is kept in a golden reliquary beside the high altar and has formed the focus of many traditions throughout the centuries. It was believed to have protected the faithful down through the centuries from many dangers and evils, including famine and war, outbreaks of the plague, and the worst ravishes of the French Revolution. The veil itself is more than six meters long and made of silk. Scientific studies have shown that it is of Syrian design, of fine quality and can be traced to the first century. Every year on 15th August, the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady, the Veil is processed through the town of Chartres.

Although the Bible never mentions Christ's Blood being preserved, one of the apocryphal gospels asserts that Joseph of Arimathea preserved the Precious Blood after he had washed the dead body of Christ. A relic of the Blood of Jesus is of utmost significance, a uniquely important witness to Jesus’ Passion and a perpetual reminder of the historical character of the Christian Gospel. In Catholic belief, the Blood of Christ is precious because it is Christ's own great ransom paid for the redemption of mankind. Jesus is said to have given his life - his blood - for the sake of all humanity, atoning for every form of human sin.
