Documented theca with a relic of Saint Benedict of Nursia

18th-century oval silver crystal-fronted reliquary theca housing first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relic of Saint Benedict of Nursia. The relic is affixed to a silk background and identified on a manuscript cedula label as S. Benedicte Ab. (Saint Benedict, Abbot). On the back, the theca is secured with a perfectly preserved seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of Father Niccola Sermattei (†1780) Bishop of Assisi (1755-1780). It is accompanied by the original matching authentics document issued by Fr. Sermattei in 1757.

Saint Benedict of Nursia (†547 AD) is a Christian saint venerated in the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Churches. He is a patron saint of Europe and considered to be the founder of Western Christian monasticism. He founded twelve communities for monks and his main achievement is his "Rule of Saint Benedict", containing precepts for his monks combining the unique spirit of balance, moderation, and reasonableness.
