Vatican Reliquary theca with relics of 2 Martyr Saints: St. Vitus & St. Modestus

Round white-metal glass-fronted reliquary theca housing first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relics of two Martyrs: Saints Vitus and Modestus. The relics are affixed to a red silk ground and identified in Latin on a typeset cedulae labels as S. Viti Martyris. / S. Modesti M. ( Saint Vitus, Martyr / Saint Modestus, Martyr ). On the back, under a protective cap, the theca is secured with a seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of Monsignor Ugo Poletti (†1997), Cardinal Vicar General of Rome (1973–1991) and dated 1990.

Saints Vitus (Guy) and Modestus - martyrs under Diocletian. St. Vitus is counted as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers who give aid in times of trouble. He is specifically invoked against chorea. He is a patron of actors; comedians; Czechoslovakia; dancers; dogs; epilepsy; Mazara del Vallo, Sicily; Forio, Ischia; oversleeping; Prague, Czech Republic; rheumatic chorea (Saint Vitus Dance); Rijeka, Croatia; Serbia; snake bites; storms; Vacha, Germany; Zeven, Lower Saxony; Het Gooi, and the Netherlands. According to Tradition, Vitus was a 7-year-old son of a senator of Lucania who resisted his father's attempts, which included various forms of torture, to make him turn away from his faith. He fled with his tutor Modestus to Lucania. He was taken from there to Rome to drive out a demon that had taken possession of a son of Emperor Diocletian. He successfully performed the exorcism, but, because he stayed faithful to Christianity, he and his tutors were tortured. By a miracle, an angel brought back the three to Lucania, where they died from the tortures they had endured. Their Feast Day is celebrated by the Roman Catholic and the Eastern Churches on 15 June.
