1804 Documented reliquary theca with relics of St. John of the Cross & St. Aloysius Gonzaga

Oval glass-fronted and -backed silvered brass reliquary theca housing relics of two saints: the first-class ex ossibus (of a bone) relic of Saint John of the Cross and the first-class ex praecordis (of the inner organs) relic of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga. The relics are affixed to a silk ground and identified in Latin on typeset cedulae labels as Ex Oss. S. Ioa. a Cros / Ex Prae. S. Aloy. Gon. (of a bone of Saint John of the Cross and of the inner organs of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga).  On the back, under a protective cap, the theca is secured with a seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of Father Vitale Loschi (†1842), Bishop of Parma, Italy (1831-1842). The relic is accompanied by the original matching authentics document issued and sealed by the Bishop of Parma in 1804.

Saint John of the Cross, O.C.D. (†1591), was a major figure of the Counter-Reformation, a Spanish mystic, a Roman Catholic saint, a Carmelite friar and a priest. Patron of Contemplative life; contemplatives; mystical theology; mystics; and Spanish poets.

Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, S.J. (Italian: Luigi Gonzaga; † 1591) was an Italian aristocrat who became a member of the Society of Jesus. While still a student at the Roman College, he died as a result of caring for the victims of an epidemic. He was beatified in 1605, and canonized in 1726. He is a patron of students, Christian youth, Jesuit scholastics, the blind, AIDS patients, AIDS caregivers.
