Oval glass-fronted brass pendant reliquary theca housing first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relic of Saint Benedict of Nursia. The relic is affixed to a red silk ground, surrounded by gilt paperolle ornamentation, and identified in Latin on a manuscript cedula label as S. Bened. M. (Saint Benedict, Monk). On the back, the theca is secured with a perfectly preserved seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of Fr. Antonio Cantoni (†1781), Bishop of Faenza, Italy (1742–1767) and Archbishop of Ravenna, Italy (1767–1781).

Saint Benedict of Nursia (†547 AD) is a Christian saint venerated in the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Churches. He is a patron saint of Europe and considered to be the founder of Western Christian monasticism. He founded twelve communities for monks and his main achievement is his "Rule of Saint Benedict", containing precepts for his monks combining unique spirit of balance, moderation and reasonableness.
