Reliquary theca with relic of St. Florian, Soldier Martyr, Patron of Firefighters

Oval glass-fronted brass pendant reliquary theca housing first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relic of Saint Florian. The relic is affixed to a red silk ground, surrounded by silver wire ornamentation, and identified in Latin on a manuscript cedula label as Ex Oss. // S. Floriani. M. (Of the bone of St.Florian, Martyr). On the back, under a protective cap, the theca is secured with a perfectly preserved seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of Bishop Giulio de Tommasi (†Bishop of San Severo, Italy (1832–1843)

Saint Florian (†c. 304 AD) was a Christian saint and military commander who was martyred during the Diocletianic Persecution of Christians by being drowned in the Enns River with a millstone tied around his neck. His body was later retrieved by Christians and buried at an Augustinian monastery near Lorch. He is the patron saint of Linz, Austria; chimney sweeps; soapmakers, and firefighters. His feast day is commemorated on May 4.
