Blessed Sebastian Valfrè (1629–1710), born in Verduno, Italy, to a poor farming family, overcame hardship to study at the University of Turin, earning a doctorate in theology in 1656. Joining the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in 1651, he was ordained a priest in 1652. Known as the "Apostle of Turin," he served the poor, sick, and soldiers with great charity, notably during the 1678–80 famine and Turin’s 1706 siege. A devoted confessor and preacher, he repaired the Shroud of Turin in 1694 and inspired the Basilica of Superga. Beatified in 1834, his relics rest in Turin’s Oratory Church.
