Spectacular Russian Triptych Icon depicting Old Testament Trinity with St. Nicholas and Archangel Michael

A large triptych centered with circa 1850 icons of the Old Testament Trinity flanked by icons of St. Nicholas and the Archangel Michael, the central icon with cast and chased parcel-gilt oklad revetment cover with painted enamel identificatory plaques, struck with Cyrillic initials AF for Alexey Frolov, Moscow, 1850. The triptych is set within an ogee-shaped glazed wood frame with brass fittings.

Marks: Struck at the lower center of the oklad with maker’s marks, Moscow hallmarks, and with 84 silver standard (.875).

18c Greek Royal Doors of Iconostasis with a Scene of the Annunciation

A pair of Royal Doors depicting the Annunciation, Greece, 18th century. The shaped doors depict the Angel Gabriel and the Virgin at full length within oval gilt cartouche’ the panels are set within carved wood borders. The reverse of each door is still fitted with metal hardware.

Condition: Fair. Some wood-boring beetle damage, particularly along the base, and as is typically the case with older, Greek panels.

Russian 18th Century Icon - Mary Magdalene with St. Nicholas of Myra & St. Alexander, Patriarch of Constantinople

A triptych icon of Mary Magdalene flanked by St. Nicholas the Wonderworker of Myra and St. Alexander, Patriarch of Constantinople, with silver revetment covers, master PES, Moscow, 1780, set within a brass case with pierced ogee-shaped surmount with the cross and scrolling ornament over a red brocade silk ground. All three saints shown at full length and finely painted. The robes of SS Alexander and Nicholas with fine, scrolling gilt floral ornament. The silver revetment covers with chased and repoussé with realistic landscape receding into space below the horizon line and engraved with scrolling floral ornament. The apertures are set with cable borders, the halos with beaded and cable ornament. 

Marks: Struck on central and right panels with Cyrillic maker’s mark PES of an unknown maker and on a central panel with Moscow hallmark dated 1780 (Postnikova-Loseva no. 1987).

Russian Icon - Savior of Smolensk in silver revetment cover

An icon of the Savior of Smolensk in a gilded silver oklad revetment cover, Ivan Zakharov, Moscow, 1868, held in a glazed wood kiot shadow frame. The icon showing the Savior at full length with figures of the Venerable Sergius of Radonezh (left) and the Venerable Varlaam of Khutyn (right). His robes are chased and engraved in imitation of draped cloth and His applied halo pierced and engraved. The oklad’s borders are cast and chased with scrolling vines against a stippled ground.

Marks: Struck on the lower border and at lower left on the halo with maker’s mark, Moscow hallmarks with 84 silver standard (.875).

Condition: The icon with numerous minor areas of loss, inpainting, and discoloration. The oklad with minor dings, primarily to the borders.

The icon is depicting Anastasis - Scenes of Christ's Resurrection and Descent to the Hades painted in traditional style. The reverse of the panel with red painted inscription in Russian reading: "This icon was restored with zeal at the request of Vitaly Nikolaevich Fal'kovsky, by the icon painter Alexander Sergeevich Andrianov in 1892 in the Mit'kovki suburb.”

Russian Icon - Christ Pantocrator in silver and enamel oklad revetment cover

A late 19th-century icon of Christ Pantocrator in gilded silver and cloisonné and champlevé enamel oklad, St. Petersburg, Petr Egorovich Filippov (Ivanov 2002 no. 4390). The halo decorated with cloisonné, filigree, and transparent enamel. Christ’s garments cast and chased in trompe l’oeil work imitating draped textile and His figure is set against a ground of clover ornament. The outer borders of the gilded silver oklad revetment cover cast and chased with an unusual pattern of hobnail ornament within geometric frames, also with applied spandrels in cloisonné enamel and an identificatory plaque in champlevé. In the half-length image, Christ holds the Gospels in his left hand and makes the gesture of blessing with his right. The open “pages” of the Gospel are applied with a gilded silver shaped plate on which in blue champlevé enamel is a truncated passage from John 13:34- 35: “A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.“
