1793 Vatican documented reliquary theca with relics of St. Gregory Thaumaturgus, the Miracle-worker of Neocaesarea

Fancy oval glass-fronted silver pendant reliquary theca embellished on the outside by an intricate silver filigree decoration housing precious first-class ex ossibus (from the bone) relic of St. Gregory the Thaumaturgus. A substantial relic is affixed to a multicolored silk background decorated with gilt paperolle and silver wire ornamentation and identified on a manuscript cedula label as S. Gregori Taum. Ep. (St. Gregory, Thaumaturgus [the Wonderworker] & Bishop). On the back, the theca is secured with a perfectly-preserved seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of Fr. Francesco Saverio Cristiani O.E.S.A. († 1800), Titular Bishop of Porphyreon in a capacity of the Sacristan of the Apostolic Palace during the pontificate of Pope Pius VI (p. 1775-1799). The relic is accompanied by an original matching authentics document issued and signed by Fr. Cristiani in 1793.

Saint Gregory Thaumaturgus (†270), also known as Gregory, the Miracle-Worker of Neocaesarea, was a Christian bishop of Caesarea, venerated as a saint in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Gregory of Nyssa describes at length the miracles that gained for the Bishop of Caesarea the title of Thaumaturgus. Gregory's influence must have been considerable, and his miraculous power undoubted. It might have been expected that Gregory's name would appear among those who took part in the First Council of Antioch against Paul of Samosata; probably, he took part also in the second council held there against the same heresiarch, for the letter of that council is signed by a bishop named Theodore, which had been originally Gregory's name. His feastday is celebrated on November 17th.
