Oval glass-fronted brass pendant reliquary theca housing first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relic of Saint Matthew, Apostle & Evangelist. The relic is affixed to a gilt paper burst on a red silk ground, surrounded by silver wire ornamentation, and identified in Latin on a fancy manuscript cedula label as Ex: Oss: S: Matthei: Ap. Ev (of the bone of Saint Matthew, Apostle & Evangelist). On the back, the theca is secured with a perfectly preserved seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of Fr. Francesco Maria Ginori (†1775), Bishop of Fiesole, Italy (1736–1775).

Saint Matthew also known as Levi was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and one of the four Evangelists. He was a publican who, while sitting at the "receipt of custom" in Capernaum, was called to follow Jesus. Matthew is recognized as a saint in the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, and Anglican churches. His feast day is celebrated on 21 September in the West and 16 November in the East. He is also commemorated by the Orthodox, together with the other Apostles, on 30 June (13 July), the Synaxis of the Holy Apostles. His tomb is located in the crypt of Salerno Cathedral in southern Italy.
