Russian Icon - the Staurotheke icon with brass crucifix

The icon depicts a group of mourners flanking an insert of enameled brass crucifix. This type of family heirloom icon was typical for the Old Believers of Russian thoughout the 19th century. The Staurotheke means "Holder of the Cross" in Greek and refers to the metal crucifix incerted into the wooden board.
