Russian Icon - Descent of Christ into Hades

Icon of the Descent into Hades from the festival row of the iconostasis, Northern Russia, ca. 1650- 1700.

Condition: Extensive craquelure with paint shrinkage or lifting, inpainting, some small losses

Christ is shown in a mountainous landscape surrounded by the almond-shaped aureole of divine light breaking down the doors of Hell and rescuing Adam and Eve. Behind them waiting for their turn are the prophets and the righteous of the Old Testament including recognizable David and Solomon wearing the crowns.
