The Bogolubov Mother of God icon was ordered by the Grand Duke Andrew Bogoliubsky in 1158, in commemoration of his vision and was placed in the Nativity of Mother of God Monastery, near Vladimir. The Holy Mother Protectress is depicted as full-figured standing, hands raised in prayer turned to the right towards Christ in Heavens. She holds a scroll with the inscription “Lord, all merciful Son of God, I pray to Thee. May your people receive the gift of plenty, and may the brilliant ray of your glory descend upon the chosen place.” On the upper border, the five-figure Deisis is depicted comprising Christ, the Virgin Mary, Saint John the Baptist, and two Archangels - Michael and Gabriel.
