Russian Icon - St. John the Apostle, the Evangelist & the Theologian

Saint John the Apostle (†c. 100 AD) or Saint John the Theologian, was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. The Church Fathers identify him as John the Evangelist, John of Patmos, John the Elder, and the Beloved Disciple who is traditionally held to be the author of the Gospel of John and several other books of the New Testament. The memory of the Apostle John is celebrated in the Orthodox Church on May 21, as well as on July 13 - the Council of the Twelve Apostles, and October 9 - the repose of John the Theologian.

Saint John is depicted at a venerable age, wearing a red robe, writing in a book held in his hands and in the presence of an eagle (a symbolic representation of St. John as the Evangelist);
