Reliquary theca with relic of Saint Athanasius the Great

Oval silver glass-fronted theca housing first class ex ossibus (of the bone) relic of Saint Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria. The relic is mounted on the background of red gold and surrounded by twisted wire ornamentation. It is identified on a  paper cedula inscribed as Ex Oss(ibus) S. Athanasii Ep. C (Saint Athanasius, Bishop and Confessor)  Authenticated on the back with red wax seal of a Catholic bishop.

Saint Athanasius of Alexandria († 373), also called Athanasius the Great, Athanasius the Confessor or, primarily in the Coptic Orthodox Church, Athanasius the Apostolic, was the 20th bishop of Alexandria. His episcopate lasted 45 years, of which over 17 were spent in five exiles ordered by four different Roman emperors. Athanasius was a Christian theologian, a Church Father, the chief defender of Trinitarianism against Arianism, and a noted Egyptian leader of the fourth century.
