Reliquary theca with relics of St Martha of Bethany, and 5 Early Martyrs: Sts Cosmas & Damian, Sts Gervasius & Protasis, & St Sabina

Round glass-fronted silver theca housing relics of six early saints: Saint Martha of Bethany, Saint Unmercenary Healers Martyrs Cosmas and Damian, Saints Gervasius and Protasius, and Saint Martyr Sabina. The relics are affixed to diamond cutouts on a background of red silk and titled on typographic cedula labels. On the back, under a protective cap, the theca is secured with a red wax seal with a coat of arms of Cardinal Basilio Pompilj (†1931), the Vicar General of Rome.

Saint Martha of Bethany is a biblical figure described in the Gospels of Luke and John as a witness to Jesus' resurrection of her brother, Lazarus. She is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church, and commemorated by the Lutheran Church and the Anglican Communion. Through time, as the cult of Martha developed, the images of maturity, strength, common sense, and concern for others predominated. The Latin Church celebrates her feast day on July 29 and commemorates her sister Mary of Bethany and her brother Lazarus of Bethany on the same day. The Eastern Orthodox and Byzantine Rite Eastern Catholic Churches commemorate Martha and her sister Mary on June 4. They also commemorate them collectively among the Myrrh-bearing Women on the Sunday of the Myrrhbearers.  She is celebrated as a Holy Patron of butlers; cooks; dietitians; domestic servants; homemakers; hotel-keepers; housemaids; housewives; innkeepers; laundry workers; maids; manservants; servants; servers; single laywomen; and  travelers.

Saints Cosmas and Damian († c. ad 287) were twin brothers, physicians, and early Christian martyrs suffered martyrdom in Syria during the persecution of the Emperor Diocletian. They were venerated as early as the 4th century, when churches dedicated to them were established at Jerusalem, in Egypt and in Mesopotamia. They are Holy Patrons of surgeons, physicians, dentists, protectors of children, barbers, pharmacists, veterinarians, orphanages, day-care centers, confectioners, children in house, against hernia, and against the plague.

Saints Gervasius and Protasius are venerated as Christian martyrs, probably of the 2nd century. They are the patron saints of Milan and of haymakers and are invoked for the discovery of thieves. Their feast day in the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church is 19 June, the day marking the translation of their relics. In the Eastern Orthodox Church and in the Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church, their feast takes place on 14 October (O.S.)/24 October (N.S.), the traditional day of their death.

Saint Sabina (†125), matron and martyr from Rome. After her female slave Saint Serapia (who had converted her) was denounced and beheaded, Sabina rescued her slave's remains and had them interred in the family mausoleum where she also expected to be buried. Denounced as well, Sabina was accused of being a Christian by Elpidio the Prefect and was thereupon martyred in the city of Vindena in the state of Umbria, Italy. Sabina was later canonized as a saint, her feast day being celebrated on August 29. In 430 her relics were brought to the Aventine Hill, to a specially built basilica— Santa Sabina — on the site of her house.
