Large reliquary theca with relics of St Cesarius Martyr of Africa

Large oval glass-fronted brass theca housing very large (40 mm!) ex ossibus (of the bone) first-class relic Saint Caesarius, Martyr of AfricaThe relic is affixed to a background of red silk surrounded by paperole ornamentation and titled on cedula cartouche as S. Cesarei Martyris. On the back, the theca is secured with a red wax seal with a coat of arms of a Catholic bishop.

Saint Caesarius of Africa, also Caesarius of Terracina was a deacon of Africa, martyred at Terracina in Italy for denounceing the pagan custom of having one youth per year immolate himself to the demons by jumping off a cliff in honour of the god Apollo. The relics of the Saint Caesarius deacon and martyr are preserved in the Basilica Santa Croce in Gerusalemme in Rome (basalt urn of high altar), in the Basilica of San Frediano of Lucca, Tuscany (urn with six bones), in Terracina Cathedral (urn with two shins and a reliquary arm), and in other churches around the World.
