Reliquary theca with relics of St Onuphrius of Anchorite, Hermit & Desert Father

Oval double-crystal reliquary theca housing first-class ex ossibus (from the bone) relic of Saint Onuphrius of Anchorite. The relic is identified on a cedula label. The theca is secured by a perfectly preserved seal of red Spanish wax with a clear imprint of a coat of arms of an unidentified Catholic Bishop. Please note that the relic is no longer affixed to the background and is loose inside of the theca.

Onuphrius or Onoufrios venerated as Saint Onuphrius in both the Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Catholic Churches; as Venerable Onuphrius in Eastern Orthodoxy and as Saint Nofer the Anchorite in Oriental Orthodoxy lived as a hermit in the desert of Upper Egypt in the 4th or 5th centuries.  Onophrius was one of the Desert Fathers who made a great impression on Eastern spirituality in the third and fourth centuries, around the time that Christianity was emerging as the dominant faith of the Roman Empire. At this time many Christians were inspired to go out into the desert and live in prayer in the harsh environment of extreme heat and cold, with little to eat and drink, surrounded by all sorts of dangerous animals and robbers.
