Saint Peter († between AD 64 and 68), was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ, leaders of the early Christian Church. He is also venerated as the "Apostle of the Apostles" and the first pope of the Roman Catholic Church, ordained by Jesus in the "Rock of My Church" dialogue in Matthew 16:18. Christian churches all venerate Peter as a major saint and associate him with founding the Church of Antioch and later the Church in Rome.
According to tradition, Saint Peter, when he was condemned to death in Rome, requested to be crucified upside-down because he did not believe that a man was worthy to be killed in the same manner as Jesus Christ. "But now it is time for thee, Peter, to deliver up thy body unto them that take it. Receive it then, ye unto whom it belongeth. I beseech you, the executioners, crucify me thus, with the head downward and not otherwise: and the reason wherefore, I will tell unto them that hear" (Acts of Peter)
