Theca with relic of Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist

18th-century oval silver glass-fronted theca housing relic of Saint John, the Apostle and Evangelist. The relic is surrounded by twisted wire and paperolle ornamentation and identified with paper cedula inscribed in 18th-century ductus as S. Joan Ap. Ev. Authenticated with red Spanish wax seal of a Catholic Bishop on the back.

Saint John the Apostle was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus and brother of James, another of the Twelve Apostles. Christian tradition holds that he outlived the remaining apostles and that he was the only one to die of natural causes. He is a holy patron of love, loyalty, friendships, authors, booksellers, burn-victims, poison-victims, art-dealers, editors, papermakers, publishers, scribes, scholars, and theologians.
