Reliquary theca with relic of St Justin, Martyr

18th-century oval glass-fronted theca housing unusually large first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relic of Saint Justin, Martyr. The relic is affixed to a background painted red and titled on manuscript cedula label as S. Justinae M. (Saint Justin Martyr). On the back, the theca is secured by a perfectly preserved seal of red Spanish wax with a coat of arms of a Roman Catholic Bishop.

Saint Justin was an early Christian apologist, who is regarded as the foremost interpreter of the theory of the Logos in the 2nd century. He was martyred, alongside some of his students, and is considered a saint by the Roman Catholic, the Anglican, the Eastern Orthodox, and the Oriental Orthodox Churches. His feast is commemorated on June 1.
