Reliquary theca with relics of Saint Peter Chanel, Protomartyr of Oceania

Round glass-fronted reliquary theca dating to 1920's housing first-class ex ossibus (from the bone) relics of Saint Peter Chanel. The relics are affixed to a red silk background and identified on a typographic cedula as B. Petri Chanel Mart. S. M. (Blessed Peter Chanel, Martyr of the Society of Mary)On the back, under a protective cap, the theca is protected by a seal of red wax with an imprint of a coat of arms of the Society of Mary's Postulator General.

Saint Peter Chanel (†1841) was a Catholic priest, member of the Society of Mary, missionary, and martyr killed during the missionary mission to the Pacific island of Futuna.  He was declared a martyr and beatified in 1889. He was canonized on 12 June 1954 by Pope Pius XII. St Peter Chanel is recognized as the protomartyr and patron saint of Oceania. His feast day is celebrated on 28 April.
