Reliquary theca with relics of St John Berchmans, Patron of Students & Altar Servers

Round glass-fronted reliquary theca housing a relic of St John Berchmans. The relic is centered on a round lithographic label on a gold silk background and is identified as S. Joan Berchm. C. (Saint John Bermans, Confessor). On the back, the theca is secured by a perfectly preserved seal of red Spanish wax with a clear imprint of a coat of arms of Monsignor Pierre-Lambert Goossens (†1906), a Belgian Cardinal who served as Archbishop of Mechelen (1884 -1906).

Saint John Berchmans, SJ (Dutch: Jan Berchmans) (†1621) was a Belgian Jesuit scholastic and is a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. Berchmans was declared Blessed in 1865, and canonized in 1888. He is the patron saint of altar servers. The Saint is currently inscribed in the 2004 official edition of the Catholic Church's Martyrologium Romanum (p. 451) on 13 August, the date of his dies natalis (heavenly birthday). He is celebrated by the Society of Jesus on Nov. 16.
