Reliquary theca with relics of Saint Aurelius Ambrosius & Saint Margaret of Cortona

Oval glass-fronted silvered brass theca housing relics of Saint Aurelius Ambrosius and Saint Margaret of Cortona. The relics are affixed to a red silk background identified on a manuscript cedulae labels as S. Ambr, Ep. / S. Marg. Cort. (Saint Ambrosius, Bishop, Saint Margaret of Cortona. ).  On the back, under the protective cap with an engraved portrait of St. Margaret affixed to the inside, the theca is secured by a seal of red Spanish wax with an imprint of a coat of arms of Fr. Francesco Saverio Cristiani O.E.S.A. († 1800), Titular Bishop of Porphyreon in a capacity of the Sacristan of the Apostolic Palace during the pontificate of Pope Pius VI (p. 1775-1799).

Saint Aurelius Ambrosius (†397), better known in English as Ambrose, was a bishop of Milan who became one of the most influential ecclesiastical figures of the 4th century. Ambrose was a staunch opponent of Arianism, and has been accused of fostering persecutions of Arians, Jews, and pagans. Traditionally, Ambrose is credited with promoting "antiphonal chant", a style of chanting in which one side of the choir responds alternately to the other, as well as with composing Veni redemptor gentium, an Advent hymn. Ambrose was one of the four original Doctors of the Church and is the patron saint of Milan. His feast day is celebrated on December 7 and he is the patron saint of Beekeepers; bees; bishops; candle makers; domestic animals; French Commissariat; geese; learning; livestock; Milan; police officers; students; and wax refiners.

Saint Margaret of Cortona, T.O.S.F., (†1297) was an Italian penitent of the Third Order of St. Francis who was canonized in 1728. She is the patron saint of the falsely accused, hoboes, homeless, insane, orphaned, mentally ill, midwives, penitents, single mothers, reformed prostitutes, stepchildren, and tramps.
