1857 Documented theca with a scarce relic from the Vestment of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Large oval silver glass-fronted reliquary theca housing precious ex Veste (from the Vestment) relic of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A substantial interwoven relic is affixed to a red silk background decorated with gilt paperolle and silver wire ornamentation. The precious relic is identified on a manuscript paper cedula label as Ex Veste BVM (from Vestment of the Blessed Virgin Mary). On the back, under a protective cap, the theca is secured with a perfectly-preserved seal of red Spanish wax bearing an imprint of a coat of arms of Monsignor Costantino Patrizi Naro (†1876), and the Vicar General of the Roman Curia and the archpriest (1845-1867) of the Papal Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, the largest Catholic Marian church in Rome. The relic is accompanied by an original matching authentics document issued and signed by Monsignor Naro in 1857.

The Virgin Mary’s Garment or Vestment is considered among the most significant Marian relics. The feast of the deposition of Mary’s vestment/garment is celebrated on July 2.
