Documented theca with relics of St. Francis de Sales & St. Jane Frances de Chantal, founders of the Visitation of Holy Mary

18th century round glass-fronted lidded ivory reliquary theca housing ex carne (of the flesh) first-class relics of Saint Francis de Sales and Saint Jane Frances de Chantal. The relics are titled on a paper cedula as chair de s. f. De Sales/ chair s. m. de Chanta(l)(of the flesh of St. Francis de Sales / of the flesh of St. Janes Frances de Chantal). The theca is affixed by a faded red silk cord to a seal of red Spanish wax on a perfectly preserved certifying authentics document dated 1780 and issued by Fr. Jean-Pierre Biord (†1785), Bishop of Geneva (p. 1787-1802).

Saint Francis de Sales, CO OM OFM Cap. (†1622) was a Bishop of Geneva who became noted for his deep faith and his gentle approach to the religious divisions in his land resulting from the Protestant Reformation. Along with St. Jane Frances de Chantal, Sales founded the women's Order of the Visitation. He was beatified in 1661 by Pope Alexander VII, who then canonized him four years later. In 1877, he was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX.

Saint Jane Frances de Chantal († 1641) was a French Roman Catholic Saint, who founded a religious order Congregation of the Visitation of Holy Mary (Visitandines). She was beatified on 21 November 1751 by Pope Benedict XIV and canonized on 16 July 1767 by Pope Clement XIII. She is a patron of forgotten people; in-law problems; loss of parents; parents separated from children; widows.
