Blesseds Rita Dolores Pujalte Sánchez and Francisca Aldea Araujo were Spanish nuns martyred during the Spanish Civil War. Rita, born in 1853, in Aspe, Alicante, grew up in a devout Christian family. She joined the Sisters of Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1888, becoming Superior General in 1900 until 1928. Known for her piety, she was active in catechesis and charity. Francisca, born in 1881, in Somolinos, Guadalajara, was orphaned young and educated at the Sisters’ St. Susanna’s College in Madrid. She entered the same congregation in 1899, taught, and held leadership roles. On July 20, 1936, revolutionaries stormed their college. The frail, elderly Rita (83, nearly blind) and Francisca (54, ill) were taken from the chapel, driven to a Madrid suburb, and shot. They were beatified by Pope John Paul II on May 10, 1998, and their uncorrupted bodies remain venerated.
