Extremely rare reliquary with first-class hair relic of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Extremely rare silver glass-fronted reliquary theca decorated with ornate silver filigree ornamentation housing an important first-class bodily relic of the Hair of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The relic is affixed to a green ground surrounded by gilt paper and silver wire and identified in Latin on a typeset paper cedula label as Capill. B.V.M. (Of the Hair of the Blessed Virgin Mary). On the back, the theca is secured by a seal of red Spanish wax with a clear imprint of a coat of arms of Fr. Giovanni Vincenzo Bracco (†1889), Titular Bishop of Magydus, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem (1873-1889), and Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre.

The Hair of Our Lady is the rarest and the most desirable of all holy relics and the only first-class relic we have of the Most Holy Mother of God. Since the Blessed Virgin Mary was assumed into Heaven with body and soul, no physical relics of Her exist. The sole exception is that of Her hair, which had been preserved and venerated since antiquity in the Holy House of Nazareth. The Holy relic was initially kept by the Patriarchs of Jerusalem until the fifth century when it was ordered by the Byzantine Empress Pulcheria for the Holy relics of the Virgin's Veil and Hair to be translated to Constantinople.
