Theca with a first class ex ossibus relic of Saint Paschal Baylon

Oval glass-fronted silver reliquary theca housing the first-class ex ossibus (of the bone) relic of Saint Paschal Baylon. The relic is affixed to the background of red silk, surrounded by silver wire ornamentation and identified on a manuscript cedula label as S. Pasqual Bayl. (Saint Paschal Baylon). On the back, the theca is secured by perfectly preserved seal of red Spanish wax with a coat of arms of an unidentified Roman Catholic bishop.

Saint Paschal Baylon (†1592) is a saint in the Roman Catholic Church noted for his strict austerities, which he imposed upon himself and his love for and compassion towards the ill. He is known for his strong and deep devotion to the Eucharist. Pope Paul V beatified him in 1618 and Pope Alexander VIII canonized him in 1690. He is known as the "Seraph of the Eucharist" and is the patron saint of Eucharistic congresses and Eucharistic associations. His feast day is commemorated on May 17.
